Adding a Brushless Motor to Your Axial® SCX30™

Brushless Motor Upgrade for the Axial® SCX30™ – Mofo RC

Axial® SCX30™ Upgrade Guide

Adding a Brushless Motor to Your Axial® SCX30™

The stock brushed motor in the SCX30™ gets the job done — until you've driven one with brushless. Smoother throttle, more control, better crawling. Here's exactly what you need and why it matters.

Why upgrade the Axial® SCX30™ to brushless?

The Axial® SCX30™ ships with a brushed motor — and for a lot of people, that's fine out of the box. But brushed motors have real limitations: they wear out faster, run hotter under load, and don't give you the fine throttle control that makes technical crawling feel good.

A brushless system changes the feel of the truck completely. Smoother low-speed control, more consistent power delivery, and longer motor life. Once you've driven a brushless SCX30™, it's hard to go back.

The other thing brushless gets you is tunability. With the Mofo RC Reaper ESCape 32 ESC, you can dial in drag brake, crawler mode, throttle response, and more — all via Wi-Fi from your phone. No programming box required.

What do you actually need to go brushless on the Axial® SCX30™?

Here's the short list. The good news: a Mofo RC combo covers most of it in one purchase.

  • A brushless motor — sized to fit the SCX30™'s motor mount. Both the NanoBam and NanoBeast are direct fits with no special mount required.
  • A brushless ESC — the stock ESC cannot drive a brushless motor. The Mofo RC Reaper ESCape 32 ESC comes included with both combos and arrives pre-programmed for your motor.
  • A receiver — when upgrading to brushless, the SCX30™ requires a standalone receiver. This applies to any brushless system, not just Mofo RC. Popular choices include Spektrum®, Flysky®, and Radiolink® receivers depending on your transmitter.
  • A battery — the stock SCX30™ battery is a 2S pack and works with both combos. No new battery needed.
A note on receivers: The stock brushed SCX30™ setup doesn't require a standalone receiver, but upgrading to brushless does — regardless of which brand or combo you choose. It's a brushless system requirement, not something specific to Mofo RC. If you're not sure which receiver to get, reach out and we'll point you in the right direction.

US-Based Support

Real people who run RC crawlers, not a ticket queue. If you have questions before or after buying, we answer them.

Pre-Programmed & Ready

The Mofo RC Reaper ESCape 32 ESC ships with base settings already dialed in for your specific motor. Unbox, install, run.

Wi-Fi Tuning — No App

Connect your phone to the ESC's Wi-Fi hotspot and tune everything from a browser. Adjust crawler mode, drag brake, and more in minutes.

It comes down to two things: your chassis and your driving style. If you're running the stock plastic Axial® SCX30™ chassis, the NanoBeast 3200Kv is the easier path — it fits without any modification. If you're on an aftermarket chassis kit, both motors fit without a special mount, so the choice is about feel. The NanoBam 3500Kv is a larger motor with a smoother, wider throttle band — great for dialed-in, precise crawling. The NanoBeast 3200Kv is more compact with more punch — snappier response and a smaller footprint. If you're not sure which chassis you have or want a recommendation, just reach out.
A receiver is a small radio module that connects to your ESC and picks up the signal from your transmitter (your radio controller). The stock brushed SCX30™ doesn't require one, but upgrading to brushless does — this applies to any brushless system, not just Mofo RC. Common options include Spektrum, Flysky, and Radiolink receivers. If you're unsure which one works with your radio, just ask us and we'll point you in the right direction.
Both combos are designed to be plug-and-play on the Axial® SCX30™ — no special motor mount required for either. The NanoBeast fits every SCX30™ chassis including the stock plastic body with zero modification. The NanoBam is a larger motor and requires some light trimming on the stock plastic chassis — on an aftermarket chassis kit, it drops straight in. The Mofo RC Reaper ESCape 32 ESC arrives pre-programmed for your motor, so there's nothing to configure before your first run.
Cheaper import options require manual ESC tuning before you get smooth, usable performance — you're doing setup work before your first run. Premium import brands offer quality hardware but require an app download to configure the ESC, and support is international with slow response times. Mofo RC arrives pre-programmed and delivers smooth, buttery performance straight out of the box. Tuning is available via Wi-Fi from any browser — no app download, no programming box. And if you need help, support is US-based and fast.
No. The stock Axial® SCX30™ battery is a 2S pack and works with these combos. No new battery required.
